I am not one to dwell on the past, but going through my stash to find my 2016 makeup favorites is another matter. I have discovered a lot of amazing new makeup this year, some of which has become my go-to, holy grail, marry me-status makeup so I can’t wait to share them with you. This is a long post!
I shared my favorites on my Youtube channel recently and had to split the video in two because this year has been so phenomenal. Next to my “regular” favorites, I have added a whole video with my favorite products from Italian brands (here). On the blog instead I decided to go through a more traditional split, and this post will be all about my favorites products for the base.
I had quite some trouble finding a good foundation until this year, when instead I found 2 (actually 3, but more on that soon) amazing foundations perfect for my combination-oily skin. The drugstore hero and everyday foundation is the L’Oréal Infallible Pro Matte foundation. I used shade 22 and 24 during the year and tried shade 20 but that was way too ashy on my warm skin tone. The high end discovery of the 2016 is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light foundation that I bought on recommendation of Elsa of Like a Candy Shop. I used the excuse of getting married to buy this more expensive product, but the sample I tried worked so well that I couldn’t skip it.
My usual favorite for a long time has been the Maybelline Fit Me concealer and I still love it to the moon, but in 2016 I discovered the Catrice Liquid Camouflage concealer thanks to Giulia’s (Glitter For Breakfast) recommendation. The coverage is a bit higher than the Fit Me but unfortunately they only have 3 very light shades and I can’t use it in summer.
To set my under eye I have been using exclusively the Anastasia Beverly Hills Banana Powder from their Contour Kit. It brightens, doesn’t crease and gives a bit of a blurring effect. I love it! However, since i’m an oily mess, I need another powder to set the rest of my face. I loved the MAC Blot powder for the first half of the year, then I heard Elenia (Miss Haul) swears by the Neve Cosmetics Hollywood powder so I ordered a mini size to try. That was it, I was hooked. I bought a full size and use it every single day, whether I am wearing a full face, only a BB cream or just concealer. It keeps my oil at bay for 6-7 hours perfectly and gives you a blurred appearance. I heard there is a pressed version now, and I know what I’m buying when I’m back in Europe.
I used four contour powders during the year. I started off using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit, wonderful but too many shades (3) to choose from and it wasn’t a relaxed choice each time. Then Nabla release their Shade & Glow line (read about it here) and I was obsessed with the shade Cameo, and still am. Cameo is the darker of the shades and long story short it’s a product that you need to build up and gives you a flawless natural looking contour. On the opposite side of pigmentation, I tried the Mulac Cosmetics contour powder in Ares and loved that one as well! Ares is extremely pigmented and more of a “traditional powder”. I really liked the color for the summer when I’m darker. Final discovery and current obsession is the Makeup Geek contour powder in Bad Habit for warm fair skin. This has my favorite combination of pigmentation and shade match. It feels similar to the Mulac one, but is a better match for my skin tone.
That 2016 has been the year of the Glow is no secret and I have tried a lot of highlighters this year. The shiniest and prettiest of them all has been The Balm Mary Lou Manizer. It is the most versatile shade that gives you the highest payoff for a glow that you can see from space. Whereas Mary Lou is a light champagne shade, I love gold highlights and the Kiko Water eyeshadow in 208 light gold has answered all of my prayers. It is a gorgeous golden shadow with an amazing sheen that you might have seen in my Color Crush: Gold video.
2016 has been the year of blush pans with the release of the Nabla Blossom Blushes. I reviewed most of them when they launched (here) and I kept using them throughout the year. I also picked up the latest shade Satellite of Love (look here) and this is possibly my favorite of them all. Another important launch this year was of the new H&M Beauty line, of which the blushes are my favorite part. I purchased a bunch of them (read here) and depotted them because I prefer to have a Z-palette full of them rather than many single compacts.
Eyes, brows and lips are coming in another post soon since we’re reaching the 1000 words on this one and I don’t want to bore you to sleep. I hope you enjoyed this first half of my 2016 makeup favorites and will come back for the second half. Do we have any favorites in common?
Some Blog News:
Since it’s the beginning of the year I wanted to refresh the blog up a bit. As you have maybe noticed, I moved to a self-hosted domain in September and changed the looks of the blog. Taking inspiration for my beloved emails from Caroline Hiron’s blog, with 2017 I want to implement a newsletter so that you can decide to receive all the new posts from the blog without relying on the ever-deceiving Facebook to let you know when a new post is live. If you are interested in receiving a newsletter, sign up with the form below. For now you’ll just receive one email each time a blog post is published. However, I’d like your feedback and thoughts whether a weekly round up would be better instead?
