A lot of drama has been going around the beauty scene and it is all about the new Anastasia Beverly Hill Subculture palette launch. This is definitely a polarizing palette with people loving it and others hating it to extremes. This brought on ridiculous reviews like “the worst palette evah”or “wtf this sucks”, which in my opinion are all just riding on a few bad first impressions by the first people trying it, and nobody actually tried to find out how this palette works best. That is how I approached this palette, tip toeing around it and getting to know it before feeling completely comfortable with it. So now that I’ve had it for two weeks, this is my Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette review.
I think the main take away from my experience is that you need to go into using this palette with a VERY light hand, tapping your brush in the pans, instead of swirling. I published a short snippet on Instagram to show you how to go about it and how I take product from the palette.
Some #subculturepalette brush tapping..this is how I use my brush in this palette, as well as with Devinah matte shadows, Jeffrey Star Androgyny mattes..they are all very soft and pigmented. You just need to use a light hand..#subculture #abhsubculture #anastasiabeverlyhills #makeupvideo #beautyrp #beautyaddict #beautyjunkies #makeupgeek #jeffreestar
On the other hand, the pigmentation of this palette is like nothing I’ve tried before, except for loose matte pigments. One of my favorites is Neve Cosmetics Fondente and I’ve made some mistakes when learning to use it because it is so pigmented. I have used it in my Birthday Get Ready With Me here, if you want to check it out, and it’s also a close dupe to All Star. The matte shades in the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette are very similar both in pigmentation and texture.
I have found dupes and alternatives for all the shades in the Subculture palette in this post here, but I honestly don’t think the dupes are as good as the Subculture palette when it comes to the mattes. For a shade like Cube instead you are better off finding a dupe since it is totally useless.
I have been obsessed with the palette and it is pretty much the only one I have used in the past 2 weeks, wearing it even to go to work. I am leaving you a collage of the looks I posted on my Instagram page and created with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette.
Have you picked it up? What is your opinion on all the drama? Let me know in the comments.
